What is a Bone Mineral Density DEXA Scan?
A DEXA scan for bone mineral density is a procedure that evaluates the density of bones in the hip and spine. It is a quick and painless process, requiring a referral from your doctor. Upon arrival, your height and weight will be recorded, then you will be positioned on a flat padded table while an arm moves over you; the entire procedure lasts about 20 minutes. A specialist radiologist will analyse the results and forward them to your doctor.
Why should I get a bone mineral density DEXA scan?
This test is mainly used to diagnose osteopenia and osteoporosis—conditions characterized by reduced bone mineral density—and to assess the risk of future fractures. Unlike standard X-rays, which may only show weakened bones late in the disease process, bone densitometry can identify decreases in bone density and strength much earlier, facilitating timely treatment.
